Christ Church, the Anglican Church in Vienna (Church of England), seeks to be a welcoming and caring church, providing a spiritual home for all generations that respects diversity and invites people from every walk of life to worship God, to grow as Christians in faith and understanding, as well as to participate in God’s mission to the world.

You can learn more about our mission on our About page.

"Eternal Father, whose Son Jesus Christ ascended to the throne of heaven that he might rule over all things as Lord and King: Keep the Church in the unity of the Spirit and in the bond of peace, and bring the whole created order to worship at his feet; who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever."

—Collect for Christ the King

Christ Church Vienna, in common with other Anglican/Episcopal Churches abroad, receives no financial support from the United Kingdom. Our Church, which for many foreigners gives a feeling of a “home abroad,” is a place where one can make friends and receive help in adjusting to living in a foreign country. We also try and make a difference in many small ways to those in need in our host country and certain organisations abroad.

In order to run Christ Church and all we do, we have to raise money. More than one third of our income comes from members of our congregation, and the balance comes from our Church Shop and our annual Christmas Bazaar. However, without the support of the following loyal sponsors, the Church, the Shop and the Bazaar would be greatly reduced. We therefore would like to thank the following major contributors:

Ottakringer Brauerei Ottakringer Brauerei

They have, for more than 25 years, donated their products and tables for the Bazaar.

Erik Esbjerg Esbjerg

Esbjerg has donated the majority of our raffle and tombola prizes at the Bazaar also for more than 25 years. Through Erik Esbjerg, we would like to thank the following: Penhaligon’s London, Geo. F. Trumper, D.R. Harris, Gewista Werbegesellschaft mbH, Norbert Jakob Schmid Verlag, Wien Holding, and Norbeck GmbH.

Give to Christ Church
Christ Church Vienna is financially self-supporting. We do not receive any funds from the United Kingdom or Austria, or the Church of England. We seek to tithe our giving to support various charitable organisations. We make a contribution to the Diocese for its work of oversight and administration called Common Fund. There are four main legs to our income: 1) planned and pledged giving, 2) open collections, 3) the annual Bazaar, and 4) the Christ Church Shop. We encourage all members to plan giving, so that the ministry and outreach of our church may grow. If you would like to hear more about planned giving please contact the Treasurer or the Vice-chair of the Church Council.

How the people of God use their resources matters. Throughout the Scriptures, it is both the privilege and responsibility of the people of God to care for each other, the widow, the orphan, the stranger, and the servants of God, as well as the place of worship (see Leviticus 23:22, Deuteronomy 10:18, Luke 12:33, 1 Timothy 5:3, James 1:27, and dozens of other passages). This is part of the biblical concept of stewardship, an idea that includes caring for the numerous resources God has entrusted to us: time, finances, talent, and even Creation itself. At Christ Church, we trust that our community will not only see the value of ministry together, but will take responsibility for the right ordering of finances for our long term health and vitality as a work of God.

To this end, we share the information on this page in an effort to keep our community informed, to provide resources to help each person think through his or her personal stewardship, to demonstrate financial transparency, and to encourage all to give in appropriate ways to the church.

During the Easter season in 2021, we are focusing on stewardship. In particular, we are focusing on the important connection between Christian discipleship and generous stewardship. This focus includes special sermons, Zoom presentation from our treasurer, and other events along the way. As part of this focus, we are asking our members to think through their own giving -- whether you can commit to standing orders, whether it is the right amount or it can increased. It is important for the church member to take responsibility for funding the church, especially in such a difficult season as this pandemic. In order to make your intentions known, we ask you to fill out a stewardship form.
As we consider stewardship at Christ Church in particular, it is helpful to keep in mind some core facts about the church:
With these core facts in mind, our 2020 finances can be considered.
2020 Projected Income

2020 Projected Expenses

Based on the 2019 totals, we have been projecting an income in 2020 of €213.445 and have approved a budget of €229.414. This means we will need to use €15.969 of our reserve funds this year in order to pay for our ministry commitments if we do not raise additional income from the giving of the church members. Given this, we ask the church community to prayerfully consider additional tithes and offerings.

If every regular member of Christ Church gave an additional €10 per month this year, we would more than make up the difference between projected income and expenses.

This financial situation has been, of course, worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our expenses remain fixed while our income from the plate collection and the church shop have dramatically decreased. We remain committed to providing as many services as we can by adapting to living out our community online. We appreciate that this is a difficult time financially for many people, and we also hope that each member of our community would consider their stewardship in light of the challenging circumstances for the church as well. This is a good time for a special gift or increasing regular giving.

More information about giving to Christ Church can be found on our giving page. We welcome cash gifts in the offering, standing orders through Bank Austria (see below) or PayPal transfers in Euros, British Pounds, and US Dollars. Currently, the most useful form of income for us to receive is a monthly standing order as it allows us plan more effectively for our budget. But all gifts are welcomed.
